Writing Family History

You know the story of your life but what about your parents or grandparents lives?

  • How did they meet?
  • Who did they want to be?
  • What choices did they make that lead them to being your parent or grandparent?

To a very large extent, our family makes us who we are, yet many people have a very limited knowledge of their family.  This could be for many reasons, but one of the largest reasons I’ve found, is that the person you are interested in, does not want to give you the complete truth about their life because they don’t want to hurt or embarrass you.  After all, many people are not comfortable talking about personal trauma with loved ones.

This is where I come in.  I can speak with your loved ones and help them write their own life story.  This can be through:

  • Moral support.
  • Writing prompts and questions that will guide them through the process.
  • Assisting with research.
  • Proofreading and editing.
  • Typing up hand written notes and diaries.

All the way through to transcribing tapes and recordings that they have made.  In many cases, transcribing is often the easiest way for a person to get through their nerves about their lives.  If this is the case, the client can dictate the information and it gets emailed to me.  I then transcribe the recordings into a document that can be used to create a biography of your parent, grandparent or other loved one.

Once the records are completed and the notes transcribed, I can help in the production of a family history that can be printed and bound or delivered to you in a digital format.

Other Forms of Historical Writing.

If you are involved in other forms of historical writing, I am able to assist with research, mentoring, assisting and coaching.  Often having someone else to bounce ideas off allows you to find new areas to explore.
